Retaining walls, terraced backyards, and idaho's slopes: what boise-area homeowners need to know

Why So Many Treasure Valley Yards Have Slopes

Boise, Eagle, and Meridian sit at the edge of the foothills and river plain. Many neighborhoods were graded during development but still left homeowners with yards that slope 5-20 feet from one end to the other. Without proper management, slopes erode, collect runoff, and remain unusable.

The Two Main Solutions: Walls and Terracing

A single retaining wall holds back soil along one grade change. Terracing creates multiple flat levels using two or more walls. Terracing costs more upfront but makes a much larger portion of your yard usable and plantable.

Material Options for Idaho Slopes

We use concrete block (Allan Block and similar), natural basalt, and treated timber depending on wall height and aesthetic goals. Concrete block handles higher loads and comes in many textures. Natural stone fits a more rustic landscape. Timber works for lower walls on smaller grades.

What About Drainage?

This is the single most important detail in any retaining wall project. Without proper drainage behind the wall, water pressure builds during spring runoff and Idaho rain events, eventually toppling the wall. We always include a gravel drainage layer and perforated pipe on walls over 2 feet high.

Permits and Engineering

In Boise, Eagle, and Meridian, walls over 4 feet typically require a building permit and sometimes an engineered design. We identify permit requirements during your free estimate and help you navigate the process.
